Israeli TV: BDS is not about ‘Israel bashing’

Yesterday, Israel’s top news outlet, Channel 2 News, ran a heavily-promoted, 16 minutes news segment on Israel Boycott, divestment and Sanctions (BDS). What surprised the supporters of the BDS movement in Israel, was that reporter Dana Weiss’ claimed that though BDS is gaining popularity around the world – it has nothing to do with Israel bashing (antisemitism), but the new Jewish settlements.

Weiss ridiculed deputy foreign minister Ze’ev Elkin, who runs the government’s “hasbara war,” as he puts it. Weiss: “Yes, in the foreign ministry they are for the time being sticking to the old conception: it’s all a question of hasbara. This week the campaign’s new weapon, developed with the contributions of world Jewry: (Pause) Another hasbara agency, this time with the original name ‘Face To Israel.’” She quotes the co-owner of Psagot Winery saying the boycott is “nothing to get excited about,” that people have been boycotting Jews for 2,000 years, and concluding, “If you ask me, in the last 2,000 years, our situation today is the best it’s ever been.” That final phrase, along with what Weiss describes as Elkin’s “conceptzia,” are the same infamous words that Israelis associate with the fatal complacency that preceded the surprise Yom Kippur War.

It seems, Psagot Winery, represents the typical Israeli Zionist Jews, who, according to Dr. Daniel Bar-Tal (Tel Aviv University), prefer to live in self-denial.

I know, it must have surprised the so-called “Israel’s critics”, like Dr. Noam Chomsky, Dr. Norman Finkelstein and the West Bank president Mahmoud Abbas, who while attending Nelson Mandela funeral, said: “I’m not in favour of Boycotting Israel.”

In 2012, David Horowitz blamed BDS movement for supporting a new Jewish holocaust.

Last month when the American Studies association (ASA), endorsed academic boycott of the Zionist entity, it was condemned as Israel bashing. On December 16, 2013, Israel-First Abraham Foxman (ADL) called ASA’s decision “intellectually dishonest and shameful”.

This shameful, morally bankrupt and intellectually dishonest attack on academic freedom by the American Studies Association should be soundly condemned by all who are committed to the ideal that open exchange of ideas is the most effective way to achieve change. Targeting Israeli institutions solely because they are in Israel – the only democratic country in the Middle East (blah, blah…)where scholarship and debate are encouraged and flourish — is based on a myopic and fundamentally distorted perspective of Israel and the conflict and is manifestly unjust,” said Abbe Foxman.

Somehow, I’ve always suspected BDS movement to be a Zionist scam to legitimize the Zionist occupation of 78% of historic Palestine. The BDS is critical of Israel’s post-1967 occupation of Arab territories. It has never asked to boycott Israeli government, politically, economically, socially or militarily for establishing new illegal Jewish settlements in West Bank and East Jerusalem. In fact, none of the leaders of the BDS movement is on record of questioning the illegal Jewish occupation of Palestine since 1948. However, some of leading supporters of BDS movement are on record for criticizing for authoring the book, The Wandering Who: A study of Jewish Identity Politics.
